One of the films that I got really curious about is Letters to Juliet. I simply love the film, the location (Verona, Italy), the story and the characters (Claire and Sophie).
An American girl on vacation in Italy finds an unanswered “letter to Juliet” — one of thousands of missives left at the fictional lover’s Verona courtyard, which are typically answered by a the “secretaries of Juliet” — and she goes on a quest to find the lovers referenced in the letter.
Just imagine, someone who after 50 long years is still looking for her long lost love, that’s Claire. And may I say that she’s like a teenager caged in an old woman’s body. She’s the one who brought ‘kiligs’ in the film, not the younger characters. Lels. It was so touching when Claire and Lorenzo finally met again. Who wouldn’t want to find their true love, right?
The best part of the film was during Claire and Lorenzo’s wedding reception. The scene when Claire read Sophie’s response letter to her. And it says:
“What” and “If” are two words as non-threatening as words can be. But put them together side-by-side and they have the power to haunt you for the rest of your life.
What if? What if? What if? I don’t know how your story ended but if what you felt then was true love, then it’s never too late. If it was true then, why wouldn’t it be true now? You need only the courage to follow your heart.
I don’t know what a love like Juliet’s feels like - love to leave loved ones for, love to cross oceans for but I’d like to believe if I ever were to feel it, that I will have the courage to seize it.
And, Claire, if you didn’t, I hope one day that you will.
here is the 50 y-o letter
I didn’t go to him, Juliet. I didn’t go to Lorenzo. His eyes were so full of trust I promised I’d meet him and run away together because my parents don’t approve. But, instead, I left him waiting for me below our tree - waiting and wondering where I was. I’m in Verona now. I return to London in the morning and I am so afraid. Please, Juliet tell me what I should do. My heart is breaking and I have no one else to turn to.
